Musical Director

William Stevens is a singer, conductor, director and vocal coach based in Cardiff. He is about to begin at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, studying voice with Donald Maxwell, having just completed a year at the Music Department of Cardiff University. He has been privileged to study with a number of eminent teachers including Allen St John, Ian Yemm, Pierre-Maurice Barlier, Angela Hickey and Sir John Tomlinson.
After singing for two years in the back row of Bristol Cathedral Choir, he now sings as a regular member of the choirs of Llandaff Cathedral, the Seren Singers and as a professional scholar with Cardiff Polyphonic Choir. Earlier this year he was offered a place with Genesis Sixteen, a training scheme for young professionals run by Harry Christophers, Eamonn Dougan and other members of world-renowned choir The Sixteen.
A regular performer on stage and in concert, theatrical highlights include Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress), Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Polyphemus (Acis and Galatea), The Parson (The Cunning Little Vixen), The Pirate King (The Pirates of Penzance), Pooh-Bah (The Mikado), Sir Joseph Porter (HMS Pinafore) and the title roles in Don Giovanni and Sweeney Todd. In concert his solo repertoire includes oratorios by Handel, Mozart and Haydn and song cycles by Wolf, Brahms, Vaughan Williams and Mahler.
He holds the position of Musical Director with The Cantabile Consort, Serenata Singing Group, Cardiff University Operatic Society, Cardiff University Concert Orchestra and The Palestrina Singers. With these and other ensembles, he has conducted works as diverse as Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Arvo Pärt’s Passio, Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, Lassus’ Missa Bell’ Amfitrit altera, Victoria’s Lamentations of Jeremiah and Fauré's Requiem.
Will is very much looking forward to a great year of music making with the Palestrina Singers of Cardiff University, and feels honoured to have the opportunity to develop the already thriving reputation of this dynamic ensemble.
